Can you sell used eyeglasses on the internet? (Part 5- Top 5 Best Things to Sell on eBay)

 A Quick Look Back

This series (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4) only talks about 5 of the best things to sell, but there are dozens of other things that could be considered the best thing to sell on eBay. I picked the 5 for the list because these are the things that I have experience selling. Also everything on the list is easy to ship Packing and shipping items is tedious, so it’s best to sell things that take minutes to pack up instead of hours (and getting a thermal printer is a good idea).

I know of people who make six figures selling nothing but used car parts, others who strictly sell Nike Air Jordan shoes, and others who sell nothing but jewelry. Although my yearly revenue (not profit) is only about $40,000, I only spend about 15 to 20 hours a week on my eBay business. Listing things is an investment, and once I listed my 500th item I started to get sales on a daily basis.

Why you should be selling eyeglasses

Eye glasses are cheap at thrift stores and Goodwills, but similar to clothing, most glasses are worthless. Even though about 90% of the glasses you find will be won’t have any value I still find it’s worth looking at them whenever I go into a thrift store.

I’ve sold Kate Spade (RIP) glasses for over $40 that I got for $2 at a Goodwill in Denver. At the same Goodwill I found a pair of Brooks Brothers glasses that sold for around $25, and another pair of Fossil eyeglasses that sold for over $30!

Popular brands that you know like Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch, Nike and Adidas, Ray-Ban, Eye Bobs, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, Fossil (and others) all make eyeglasses that usually sell on eBay for a $20+ profit.

A lot of glasses that you’ll come across will be scratched or cracked on the lens, or have a bit of damage like a slightly bent arm. The good news is that even damaged glasses can be sold, but the profits will be smaller. If I find a pair of glasses with a cracked, heavily scratched, or chipped lens then I sell them just for the frames.

Some pairs that you find will have lenses that are in good condition and these can be sold for higher profits. People will buy these glasses because the measurements of the strength of the lenses fit their needs.

Eyeglasses are also very small and easy to store, listing them is simple, and shipping them (see below) takes minutes- making them one of the best things to sell!

How to List eyeglasses

Taking pictures and listing of glasses can be done from anywhere. This women makes her full time income out of her RV that she lives in with her children and a lot of what she sells is glasses.

For taking pictures of glasses you only need about a square foot of space. I like to take 8 or more pictures of them from all angles and I then I take pictures of any damage or flaws.

The description of glasses can be very short. Make sure to include the brand, the style and design of the glasses, and all the measurements on the inside of the arms. I don’t wear glasses, so I’m not exactly sure what these numbers and measurements mean (the video above does), but I do know that it’s important to include them.

Most glasses will have the measurements on the inner arm, but some won’t

I always offer free shipping with eyeglasses. If a customer buys a pair of glasses from you to use the existing lenses then the strength of the glasses need to be their exact needs or the person isn’t going to be satisfied. If a customer wants to return the glasses then their going to say the glasses ‘Don’t Fit the Description’ and you’ll be forced to give free returns anyway. I find it’s best to risk the potential $3.5 return shipping cost and offer free returns. It’s also a good idea to offer free returns because (allegedly) this makes your listing show up higher on the rankings because the secret eBay algorithm likes free returns.

How to Ship them

Packing and shipping glasses takes even less time than listing them. The most annoying thing about shipping them is remembering to keep a supply of small boxes to use (I recently invested in these so I’ll actually have small boxes).

First I wrap the glasses in bubblewrap. Then I pack them in the box and cushion them using packing paper. That’s all there is to it. And remember it’s good to offer free shipping and returns for glasses!

Do they sell quickly?

Most eye-glasses sit for a while before they sell. I’ve had pairs like the Brooks Brothers and Kate Spade glasses sell in less than a week, but I’ve also had pairs that have sit for almost a year.

Even though glasses can sit for a while they’re still a great thing to sell because they are so small that storing them takes almost no room.

Wrap Up

This 5 part series will give you a good starting point on what’s good to sell on eBay. If you keep an eye out for one of these things each week you’re going to start making an extra $50 or more dollars a week.

I’m going to be releasing a comprehensive eBook on how I run my 1000 item eBay business out of my bedroom in the next few weeks so be sure to keep an eye out!

Also I wrote an ebook a while ago about 24 things that sell on eBay in 24 hours or less, so check that out here if you’re interested. Until next time.
